Frequently Asked Questions

If you don't see an answer to your question here, please send your questions to [email protected].

Where is Aprototype located?

Our engineers and consultants are based in New York.  We have CNC factories in China and will be opening a factory in Long Island at the end of 2017.

What is required for an estimate and how long is the quote good for?

Submit your CAD drawing online and we will follow up via email.  Typically, we will have detailed questions regarding precision requirements, materials, finishes, and colors that you might need to consider.  For parts with simple geometries and lower tolerance, a quote will be sent within 24 hours.

If your custom part requires special materials and ultra-high precision tooling, the quote may take up to 3 days.  This is also true for products that require assembly, stamping, or dies, etc.

Quotes are good for 30 days.  All estimates will include number of pieces, cost per piece, an outline of requirements, as well as a total cost that includes shipping and handling. Taxes will be included for New York buyers.

Quotes are subject to modification if you have special shipping, packaging, and new specifications and requirements. We provide updated estimates within 24 hours of receiving your changes.

What is the minimum order (MOQ)?

We want to help you innovate as affordably as possible.  Tell us about your prototyping needs and how many pieces you might need during each phase of development, we can provide discounts even if you only need 1 piece at a time.

What happens if I’m okay with the quote and wish to proceed?

A 30% deposit is required via credit card for us to start processing your order.  Once the order is ready to ship, we will invoice you for  the remaining payment. All invoices are sent as soon as the order is ready to ship.

We accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express.  If you require any other forms of pre-payment, just ask us and we can try to accommodate.

Once you receive your custom machined part, you can inspect the parts and provide us with feedback.  We take pride in our work and offer a satisfaction guarantee. We will replace the parts free-of-charge if there is any problem with your custom machined parts. If there are any problems due to packaging or shipping, please take photos or a short video so that we can correct and resend.

What if I require special payment terms?

Businesses can opt to establish an account with Aprototype for easy bank-to-bank transfers. We generally require a credit check and pre-approval for business accounts. With this option, payments are due and payable net 30 days from the date of invoice.

Students and professors can request a special payment plan because grant funding and disbursements vary from university to university.  With proof of academic affiliation, we can send you details for an academic payment plan.  Typically, this will be a direct school to bank transfer.

What if I need to cancel the order?

If you need to cancel the order for any reason, please send us the cancellation request in writing as soon as possible, before the order is complete.  Your 30% deposit will not be refunded if production has started.  If you send the cancellation after completion of an order, we reserve the right to invoice for the full amount.

What happens if I receive the order and it fails inspection or appears damaged?

Take photos and/or video and email us within 5 days of receiving your parts.  We guarantee satisfaction and will replace any unacceptable parts at no cost to you.

Exceptions:

1. We typically wrap parts in bubble wrap and ship in cardboard boxes. If you have special packaging instructions, they need to be submitted before confirming your estimate.  We aim to provide you low costs but special packaging and handling fees may apply.

2. We produce your parts as specified in your CAD drawings.  If changes are made after quote confirmation, we are not responsible for parts with inaccurate drawings.

What about product confidentiality?

We keep all your drawings and specifications confidential.  If you need us to sign a confidentiality agreement, just make sure you mention that to your Aprototype consultant.
